Course overview

This innovative program awards a masters qualification largely based on recognition of professional practice and is designed for experienced engineering professionals seeking career advancement. Completion of this degree recognises the discipline-based knowledge and skills developed by professionals in the workplace, offering employers and professionals an alternative to a traditional masters degree.

Progress your career with the first Australian degree allowing engineers to obtain Chartered status and a masters degree at the same time.

Graduates of the Master of Professional Practice (Engineering) automatically attain Chartered membership status with Engineers Australia and are also eligible for registration on the National Engineering Register (NER). Becoming Chartered requires you to become a member of Engineers Australia.

Upon completion of this program, you will have demonstrated advanced skills and complex knowledge in your engineering area of practice.

Indicative student workload

Successful students typically spend about 150 hours in learning and assessment for each one credit point unit. The time required to prepare evidence for credential assessment varies based on the student’s existing documentation.

Professional recognition

Graduates of the Master of Professional Practice (Engineering) will automatically be given professional registration (National Engineers Register), and attain Engineers Australia Chartered membership status (at their membership level), providing them a clear path to Chartered and independent practice as an engineering professional.

The Master of Professional Practice (Engineering) is designed for experienced engineering professionals seeking to progress their career through a professionally recognised postgraduate qualification.

Graduates of the Master of Professional Practice (Engineering) will automatically attain Chartered* membership status with Engineers Australia and will also be eligible for registration on the National Engineer Register*. Upon completion of this program, graduates will have demonstrated advanced skills and complex knowledge in their engineering area of practice.

*Both Chartered and NER credentials will be applied in the appropriate Engineers Australia occupational category Professional Engineer or Engineering Technologist based on the candidate’s undergraduate qualification.

Mandatory student checks

Any unit which contains work integrated learning, a community placement or interaction with the community may require a police check, Working with Children Check or other check.

Course rules

To qualify for the Master of Professional Practice (Engineering), students must successfully complete 3 core units (totalling 4 credit points) of formal study and 10 Professional Practice credentials.  Each Professional Practice credential will assess the performance at a masters (advanced) level in one of the Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes contextualised to Engineering. 

The course comprises the following:

  • Three (3) core units (4 credit points)
  • Ten (10) Professional Practice Credentials (Advanced Level)
  • Completion of STP050 Academic Integrity (0-credit point compulsory unit)
  • Completion of STP710 Career Tools for Employability (0-credit point compulsory unit) as a corequisite for SEP701 Introduction to Engineering Professional Practice

Students are required to meet the University's academic progress and conduct requirements.
