Course overview

This course qualifies you as a health professional with a focus on diabetes – an enormous and growing public health issue.

The incidence of diabetes is increasing in Australia, with close to 1 in 25 Australians now living with the disease. With diabetes one of the top 10 causes of death in Australia, the knowledge and skills you gain in this course will prepare you to work in an important area of health education.

This course is accredited with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA). In addition, by completing the clinical practicum and workshop components of the course, graduates may be eligible to seek registration as a Credentialed Diabetes Educator (CDE) with ADEA. As a CDE you may register with Medicare and the Department of Veterans Affairs, enabling patients/clients to seek higher rebates for the services provided.

This course may be used as Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) for the Master of Nursing Practice and the Master of Nursing Practice (Nurse Practitioner).

Professional recognition

The course is accredited by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA). In addition, by completing the clinical practicum and seminar components of the course you may be eligible to seek registration as a Credentialed Diabetes Educator with ADEA, subsequent to fulfilling the additional requirements set by ADEA for this purpose.

Course rules

To complete the Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Education students must attain 4 credit points.
All four 1 credit point units are core units (these are compulsory).

Students seeking ADEA credentialing must successfully complete a 40 hour clinical practicum (while enrolled in the course), organised by academic staff and attend a three day seminar at Burwood (Melbourne) scheduled during Trimester two. If you are not registered in Australia as a health practitioner with the appropriate registering body you will not be able to seek credentialing with the ADEA nor will you be able to attend the 40 hour clinical practicum.
