Course overview
Help shape the future of innovation in education through Deakin’s Graduate Certificate of Education Research. You will take a deep dive into an education topic of your choice, think expansively and develop specialist knowledge that may help improve the education sector or your learning institution, while advancing your career.
Develop foundational knowledge of research theories, methodologies, design and ethics. Under the supervision of experienced academic staff, you will identify an issue of your choice and design a guided research project or paper to explore it. Choose to delve into topics of curriculum, pedagogy and leadership, and benefit from access to industry thought leaders. Research skills are highly valued in education and are often required for high-level professional roles, as outlined in the Australian Professional Standards for Principals and Teachers. The research you generate in this degree can also provide a pathway to a PhD.
Career opportunities
As a graduate of this course, you will be equipped with refined research skills and a deeper knowledge of the educational context in which you work. You’ll be able to apply your knowledge in a range of education and higher education contexts and roles, including:
- school principal
- head of learning
- head of curriculum.

Pathways
Result of 60-69 marks in EDX704 Research Paper B is a pathway to Master of Education (Research) with opportunity to upgrade to a PhD at Colloquium.
Result of 70+ marks in EDX704 Research Paper B is a pathway to a PhD.
Research information
The four unit sequence comprises two research training units which provide foundational specialist research training knowledge; and two units wherein a guided research project in a specialist area is undertaken with assistance from an academic supervisor.

Course rules
To complete the Graduate Certificate of Education Research you must pass 4 credit points. This includes:
- DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin (0-credit-point compulsory unit) in your first study period
- 4 credit points of core units.
Most units are equal to one credit point. Students are required to meet the University's academic progress and conduct requirements.

Fees and charges
Tuition fees will vary depending on the type of fee place you hold, your course, your commencement year, the units you choose to study, your study load and/or unit discipline.
Your tuition fees will increase annually at the start of each calendar year. All fees quoted are in Australian dollars ($AUD) and do not include additional costs such as textbooks, computer equipment or software, other equipment, mandatory checks, travel, consumables and other costs.
