Honours is a fourth year of an undergraduate degree. The Honours year provides a dynamic environment of cross fertilisation and learning from each other. The programme enables you to take your knowledge and your screen practice to the next level. You will be treated as an independent screen practitioner and your experience will be quite different from that you have experienced as an undergraduate. Whether you are individual practitioners or working in a creative team, you will emerge from the Honours programme as a critically engaged and highly skilled screen practitioner and researcher.
The Honours programme at Deakin involves screen practice and traditional scholarly research. We teach you the fundamental skills of traditional scholarly research so that you can successfully locate your screen practice in the field and critically engage with the work of others. Honours allows you the time to focus closely on your screen practice. The Bachelor of Film, TV, Animation (Honours) has a deliberate focus to allow students to enter a single degree and receive highly regarded learning experiences in screen practice and research.
Upon completion of your Honours year you can apply for direct entry into the second year of the Masters of Film, TV, and Animation by coursework or you can choose to undertake a Masters of Film, Masters of Creative Arts or a Master of Arts. You might decide to go on to a PhD, which is a high-level research degree.
Career opportunities
The aim of the Bachelor of Film, TV, Animation (Honours) is to use real world learning strategies to increase student’s employability by producing a significant screen production project/folio. This will position the student to apply for jobs in the following spaces: Film production, TV production, Independent production houses, Advertising agencies, education facilities, independent crewing projects and anywhere where screen-based work exists.
Participation requirements
Compulsory learning experiences
Completion of compulsory technical skills or workshops are required for all students enrolled into the Bachelor of Film, Television and Animation (Honours). This is equivalent to approximately 2 X 2-hour sessions per year.

Mandatory student checks
Any unit which contains work-integrated learning, a community placement or interaction with the community may require a police check, working with children check or other check. Refer to the relevant unit guide.
Pathways
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.

Students who have a Bachelor qualification in an equivalent course will be considered for the Bachelor of Film, Television and Animation (Honours) program.

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Film, Television and Animation (Honours) students are required to complete 8 credit points including:

Course duration - additional information
Course duration may be affected by delays in completing course requirements, such as accessing or completing work placements.
There is an option with course director approval for students to complete the program over two trimesters.
International students are required to study full-time to complete their course within the duration registered on CRICOS.
Assessment
The assessment of the written exegesis and creative practice (a short film project) will be panel based. Embedded in units there will be draft essays, practical submissions, workshops and presentations to provide guidance to students.

Other learning experiences
There will an opportunity to connect with industry professions including workshops, such as Directing and Cinematography, taken by industry professionals.
Upon successful completion of the course there may be an opportunity to be included in an annual screening of Honours films at Lido Cinemas in Hawthorn at the end of the year. A list of potential industry organisations such as Australian Directors Guild and Soundfirm post house offer in-kind prizes for our annual screen awards.
Research and research-related study
The Bachelor Film Television and Animation (Honours) requires the students to complete an exegesis of approximately 4000-words which will inform the creative practice of a film of 5-15 minutes in length.
