Content

This online elective is designed to provide nursing students with the opportunity to explore and develop a basic understanding of alcohol and other drug use in society. Students will examine the social and political role that alcohol and drugs play in society and explore the impact on mental health and physical health. Elementary treatment considerations, applicable to a wide variety of healthcare settings, and a range of therapeutic nursing strategies and interventions to support the holistic health care management for individuals engaging with alcohol and other drugs will be explored. Students will also cover the nursing response to alcohol and other drug use in the clinical setting and develop an understanding of harm minimisation principles and their nursing role in minimising harm.
