Typical study commitment:

Students will spend on average 150 hours over the trimester undertaking synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning activities for this unit.

This will include 36 hours synchronous learning activities and an 80-hour professional experience placement. Students will spend 18 hours undertaking guided asynchronous learning activities.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Department of Health – Safety Screening Requirements - Police Record Check, Working With Children Check and Immunisation Status

In accordance with the Department of Health policy, all students are required to undertake a Police Record Check prior to professional experience placements in each calendar year of their course.

In accordance with the Worker Screening Act 2020, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of their course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of professional experience placement will not be able to undertake professional experience placement and this will impede progress in the course.

Students are required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their clinical learning experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for placement if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation.

Content

This unit is the first of two in the Clinical Studies Cluster: Year 1. Aligned with quality and safety principles, opportunities are provided for students to explore and develop essential nursing knowledge and skills necessary for the provision of person-centred care.

Students will develop beginning clinical decision-making skills necessary for the provision of person- centred, quality, and safe care. Essential concepts for nursing practice such as communication, promotion of comfort, management of symptoms, infection prevention and control, and management of risk will be examined and applied.

During a two (2) week professional experience placement (PEP) students will have the opportunity to develop specific mindsets and apply relevant knowledge and skills learned in this and other units.
