Content
This unit examines ways to work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, including families, organisations and communities within a contemporary context. It will provide insight, protocols, and practices and how culturally responsive engagement can be achieved. A holistic approach identifies how social, political, and economic dynamics, as well as historic and cultural differences brought about by colonisation, have influenced contemporary communities. Students will explore the structures and interactions within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the diverse roles and responsibilities of community members and their responsibilities to Country.
This unit will demonstrate culturally informed principles for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and provide opportunities for students to experience and engage with knowledge systems and boundaries. Respectful and responsive methods of engaging on-Country with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their values and knowledge are of central importance to Indigenous studies. Students will gain insight into the values, knowledges and practices that are inherent in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and how these offer a culturally cohesive approach to engaging with the world.
Students will be asked to reflexively consider their cultural positioning and perspectives, and to evaluate how these have expanded and deepened whilst engaged with Indigenous Studies units, and how they can co-contribute to positive reconciliation aligned to self-determination processes with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
