Content
We’ve all read lists of classic books that we are told we should read in our lifetime--‘must-reads’, but why are some texts considered 'classics', while others are labelled 'trash' or have 'cult' status? Books such as Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, Lolita and Breakfast at Tiffany's will be analysed in relationship to the Western canon and challenges to its formation. These books will be studied alongside: anime from Studio Ghibli; the graphic novel, Heartstopper; films; television series; ; music and popular versions of classic texts. Concepts of high, low and pop culture, alongside discussions about what texts today might survive the test of time, will also be studied.
