Content
This unit aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of renewable energy technologies and their integration into modern power grids. The wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) energy system will be covered in detail with emphasis on system modelling, design methodologies, control strategies, and the analysis of their impacts on power grid stability, reliability and operation. In addition to wind and solar PV, the unit introduces emerging technologies including electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen fuel cells, and energy storage systems. A significant component of the unit involves the design of power electronic converters and control systems essential for efficient and reliable integration of wind and PV systems. Students will develop practical skills through hands-on experience with computer-based modelling tools and experimental implementation in a laboratory setting, reinforcing their design and analytical capabilities in renewable energy systems.
