Students are required to attend and participate in on-campus practical activities on the scheduled days during the trimester course intensive.

Content

There are many factors that influence the design of an athlete’s training plan. This unit will address the wide range of factors that a coach needs to consider. Topics will include nutrition and recovery strategies, understanding the rehabilitation process of an injured athlete, fitness testing, legal and ethical issues including supplement strategies that work within the ‘Sport Integrity Australia’, and facility design. On completion of this unit, students will be able to use the evidence around an array of factors that must be considered in a conditioning program in their professional practice.

ULO1 Explain how fundamental principles of biomechanics, bioenergetics and endocrinology are relevant to the training process.

ULO2 Define, implement and interpret appropriate athlete assessment and movement screening protocols; assess individual physical fitness components; Implement performance tests and test batteries for different sports and different levels of athletes; Discuss the role of fitness testing in talent identification (TID); generate a coaching report; Interpret results and adjust training accordingly.

ULO3 Implement an injury prevention and management philosophy and practice to minimise injuries; Describe the rehabilitation principles (pathophysiology of injury); musculoskeletal screening and the role of resistance training for injury prevention; comprehend the typical structures and role of strength and conditioning coach as part of a multi-disciplinary team in maintaining a healthy athlete.

  • Must pass Assessment task 2 Coaching session (intensive); completed during on-campus trimester course intensive.
