Content

This is the second of three compulsory primary mathematics education units. The unit aims to continue to promote pre-service teachers' understanding of how mathematics is learned and therefore taught in primary school settings. Students will explore the role that families and caregivers have in students’ mathematics learning and develop strategies for reporting about and supporting this learning. Pre-service teachers will continue to develop key mathematical concepts, mathematical language, multiple representations and flexible strategies, with a particular focus on rational number, geometry, and statistics and probability. They will learn to interact with primary school students and analyse student responses to a range of mathematical tasks to identify misconceptions and ongoing learning needs.Building on coursework and professional experiences, pre-service teachers will explore the use of manipulatives, calculators and other digital technologies in primary mathematics classrooms. They will also learn to locate and modify published teaching and learning resources that can be used to guide planning and pedagogical decisions. Students will become more adept at navigating and making decisions with reference to the current Australian and Victorian curriculum documents and research literature.

ULO These are the Learning Outcomes (ULO) for this unit. At the completion of this unit, successful students can: Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes
