Scheduled learning activities - cloud:

A minimum of 2 Blackboard Collaborate sessions will be conducted during the trimester.

The first BB collaborate to occur 2-weeks prior to submission of assessment 1.

The second BB collaborate to occur 2-weeks prior to submission of assessment 2.

Content

This unit will explore essential knowledge, concepts, issues and strategies to engage Middle Years learners. Students are introduced to current research into how Middle Years students learn, their diversity as learners and the implications for teaching. The program of study will include recent developments pertaining to Australian Middle Years schooling, relevant research impacting education, teachers and young people, Middle Years curriculum and its implementations in Australian schools and consider strategies for assessment and providing feedback to students about their learning.

Students will examine in detail the knowledge and skills required to plan for teaching and learning activities in the Middle years of the Australian curriculum. This unit will enable you to align your school-based professional experience placement relevant to your specialist teaching areas and address the essential professional knowledge to undertake teaching Middle Years learners, including an introduction to the Practice Principles for excellence in Teaching and Learning and the Australian Standards for Teachers.

Apply key concepts, research and theories to demonstrate understanding of Middle Years learners and identify communication strategies (verbal and non-verbal) that support learning and engagement.

Apply knowledge of young people’s physical, social & intellectual development and how students learn to articulate and debate contemporary issues for teaching in applied learning in the middle years, including: student engagement, challenging behaviour, student wellbeing, learning styles, appropriate pedagogical approaches, inclusivity and diversity, and literacy and numeracy.

Design teaching strategies that are responsive to the needs of diverse learners across a full range of abilities and including students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds that are based on Australian curriculum guidelines for your specific specialist learning areas and assess and evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in an extended applied learning sequence.
