Content

This Deakin Teacher Performance Assessment (DTPA) unit aims to challenge and deepen your understanding of teaching as a profession, through studying the dimensions of the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers and teachers’ professional lives, including professional relationships within schools and other community education settings. As you prepare to graduate and become teachers, you will be assisted to identify the historical, cultural and political forces that have shaped, and are (re)shaping, the roles and expectations of teachers working for education institutions in the middle and the post-compulsory years of education and training. You will review and consolidate the ways you conceptualise your professional practice as educators of young people in contemporary settings. You will draw on current theories of professional development and lifelong learning which will explore the potential of individuals to influence organisational change processes. Using authentic case studies, you will be able to identify, interpret and apply the key sources of data which are used to generate effective improvement in practice.

This knowledge will be used to analyse individual student assessment data to design learning strategies aimed at improving student learning outcomes and teaching practice. You will draw on the research literature, current legislation and relevant policies to debate the ethical and professional issues that impact on the collection, use and reporting of data informing school performance and student learning.

In addition, you will make use of approaches and methods for analysing professional practice within the context of your own work environments and career pathways as you enter the teaching profession. Importantly, you are able to identify and engage with professional learning activities that support ongoing development and learning in ways that are directly aligned to support improved student learning.

The DTPA is your opportunity to show evidence that you are profession-ready and have successfully developed the attributes of a Graduate Teacher.
