Content

In this unit, students will examine and analyse the mathematical learning that occurs in the youngest generation of children; infants and toddlers. Learning is subtle during this time of life and can be missed if not understood. In this unit you will explore what mathematics looks like for infants and toddlers, how this learning sets them up for their later mathematics learning, and how teachers can support infant and toddlers mathematics.

Students will have the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice during a 10-day placement with infants and toddlers.

ULO These are the Learning Outcomes (ULO) for this unit. At the completion of this unit, successful students can: Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes
ULO1

Critically analyse, evaluate and apply knowledge of mathematical purpose, content knowledge and pedagogy for teaching and learning in infant and toddler settings.

GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities

GLO4: Critical thinking

ULO2

Evaluate and investigate theories and perspectives that provide insights into key foundational learning for mathematics that develop and are refined by infants and toddlers over time.

GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities

ULO3

Interpret and reflect on own and others teaching and learning practices, pedagogies and knowledge to set professional learning goals through the analysis of reflections, feedback and professional practice documentation

GLO4: Critical thinking

GLO5: Problem solving

GLO6: Self-management

GLO7: Teamwork

ULO4

Apply knowledge of curriculum, policy and regulation required of teachers into their professional practice, including assessment and interpretation of children’s learning, lesson planning and a range of teaching practices

GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities

GLO4: Critical Thinking

GLO5: Problem solving

GLO6: Self-management

ULO5

Apply a critical mathematical lens to infants and toddlers’ play and plan for play that demonstrates awareness of the content and continuum of mathematics learning.

GLO3: Digital literacy

GLO4: Critical thinking

These Unit Learning Outcomes are applicable for all teaching periods throughout the year.

Assessment

Assessment Description Student output Grading and weighting
(% total mark for unit)
Indicative due week
Assessment 1 - Learning Purpose and Practice Knowledge 800 words 15% Week 3
Assessment 2 - Planning for practice 1200 words 35% Week 7
Assessment 3 - Developing a practice portfolio for mathematical teaching 2000 words 50% Week 12

The assessment due weeks provided may change. The Unit Chair will clarify the exact assessment requirements, including the due date, at the start of the teaching period.

Hurdle requirement

Brief summary of hurdle requirement Rationale Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes
20-days of professional experience placement. Satisfactory completion of the Professional Experience component is compulsory in order for the complete the unit. Successful completion of practical teaching experience is a requirement of the Victorian Institute of Teaching and ACECQA. ECE352 has a professional experience component of 20 days embedded and as such, the academic tasks and practical teaching knowledge and competencies must be successfully completed in order to pass this unit. If students do not pass either the practicum or assessment parts of this unit, the entire unit, including placement will need to be repeated. GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities;
