Content
The common refrain, ‘I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like’ indicates how difficult it can be to express our thoughts about art. We often react to it emotionally or intellectually, but struggle to find the words to explain our response. This unit provides the opportunity to hone your skills in reviewing work in the performing or visual arts. Exploring ways to interpret, discuss and analyse artwork can help you build your own practice, heighten your appreciation of the work of others, and enhance your ability to critically assess it. This unit will support you to develop critical evaluation and expression skills that are applicable across many professional roles, including teaching, media reporting and cultural programming. This unit provides the opportunity to experience and then review an exhibition or performance through different media (podcast, vodcast and publication). It draws on expertise and insights from staff in Melbourne’s major cultural institutions in order to understand common terms used in the industry, the context for the work presented, and key themes or aspects to inform your reviews. This unit is wholly online except for exhibition/performance visits and can be undertaken at the student’s own pace within trimester dates. Students are provided with a ticket to a major exhibition or performance and will have access to relevant expertise to better understand these activities.
