Students will on average spend 150 hours over the trimester undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.
This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.
This unit draws on prior curriculum and pedagogical content knowledge and skills to examine a range of evidence-informed teaching and assessment strategies to support the effective teaching in the pre-service teacher’s middle years curriculum area. The unit develops pre-service teachers’ capacity to apply advanced curriculum and pedagogical content knowledge to effectively sequence learning experiences in practical middle years secondary school contexts. Pre-service teachers will learn to select and justify appropriate teaching and assessment strategies relevant to their middle years specialist teaching area and apply advanced knowledge of formative and summative assessment strategies to evaluate senior students’ student achievement. The unit prepares pre-service teachers to critically evaluate and justify the selection of relevant, contemporary middle years learning resources, including the use of ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities. Strategies to support effective assessment moderation are also addressed and practiced supporting consistent and reliable judgements of student achievement.

Evaluation: Discuss strategies to support assessment moderation as relevant to the middle years curriculum context and justify these approaches as effective measures to ensure consistent and reliable judgements of student achievement.
