In this unit, you will learn the essential journalistic skills needed to produce engaging, publishable news and feature stories. You will gain insights into what makes news, how to research and interview for news stories, and how to write in news style for print and online publication. You will also develop your skills in feature writing, paying particular attention to background research and locating sources for creating longer form journalism. Pitching story ideas to editors and writing as a freelancer are also topics you will learn about in this unit. Writing the News will equip you with many of the practical skills and techniques that you need to get started as a journalist in the contemporary media landscape.
Each unit in your course is a building block towards Deakin's Graduate Learning Outcomes - not all units develop and assess every Graduate Learning Outcome (GLO).

These tools stay with you beyond the classroom, helping you to keep learning, explore ideas more deeply, and connect with knowledge in ways that matter to you.
