Course overview

This innovative program awards a masters qualification largely based on recognition of professional practice and is designed for experienced engineering professionals seeking career advancement. Completion of this degree recognises the discipline-based knowledge and skills developed by professionals in the workplace, offering employers and professionals an alternative to a traditional masters degree.

Progress your career with the first Australian degree allowing engineers to obtain Chartered status and a masters degree at the same time.

Graduates of the Master of Professional Practice (Engineering) automatically attain Chartered membership status with Engineers Australia and are also eligible for registration on the National Engineering Register (NER). Becoming Chartered requires you to become a member of Engineers Australia.

Upon completion of this program, you will have demonstrated advanced skills and complex knowledge in your engineering area of practice.

Indicative student workload

Successful students typically spend about 150 hours in learning and assessment for each one credit point unit. The time required to prepare evidence for credential assessment varies based on the student’s existing documentation.

Professional recognition

Graduates of the Master of Professional Practice (Engineering) will automatically be given professional registration (National Engineers Register), and attain Engineers Australia Chartered membership status (at their membership level), providing them a clear path to Chartered and independent practice as an engineering professional.

Course rules

To complete the Master of Professional Practice (Engineering) students must pass 4 credit points and meet the following course rules to be eligible to graduate:

  • STP050 Academic Integrity (0-credit-point compulsory unit)
  • STP710 Career Tools for Employability (0-credit-point compulsory unit) as a corequisite for SEP701 Introduction to Engineering Professional Practice
  • 4 credit points of core units
  • 10 Professional Practice Credentials (Advanced Level)

To qualify for the , students must successfully complete 3 core units (totalling 4 credit points) of formal study and 10 Professional Practice credentials. Each Professional Practice credential will assess the performance at a masters (advanced) level in 1 of the Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes contextualised to Engineering.

Course duration

You may be able to study available units in the optional third trimester to fast-track your degree, however your course duration may be extended if there are delays in meeting course requirements, such as completing a placement.

Tuition fees will vary depending on the type of fee place you hold, your course, your commencement year, the units you choose to study, your study load and/or unit discipline.
