Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - online unit enrolment:

11 x 2 hour seminars

Students must also complete 11 x 1 hour self-paced interactive modules (pre-recorded). These modules will provide students with theoretical background for practical research and counselling skills taught in online seminars. Online seminars each week will support students to develop applied research and counselling skills. These seminars will focus on demonstrating and practising these skills in dyads and triads (e.g. Describing research to clients, summarizing and presenting research to groups, qualitative interview skills, evaluating and discussing digital technologies with clients, delivering and scoring outcomes measures).

Typical study commitment:

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the trimester undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Content

In this unit students will explore academic research in relation to counselling and mental health. Students will learn about the historical tradition and development of research in counselling, common research methods, how to evaluate the quality of research evidence, and how to communicate research to a variety of audiences. Students will explore how to translate research into counselling practice, as well as the meaning and importance of evidence-informed practice. This unit will also equip students to become effective research-practitioners through the use of counselling outcomes measures, and how to incorporate and interpret these measures in their counselling practice. Students will also be taught how to evaluate the use and impact of digital technologies in counselling, stay up-to-date with contemporary counselling research.
