Typical study commitment: | Students will on average spend 150 hours over the trimester undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit. This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site. |
Note:Online self-paced interactive learning each week will provide students with the theoretical background for practical counselling skills taught in online seminars. Online seminars each week will support students to develop applied counselling skills. These seminars will focus on demonstrating and practising counselling activities in dyads and triads. |
Content
This unit will provide students with the foundational knowledge and awareness required to counsel clients from a range of diverse and intersectional backgrounds. Students will also learn about the impact of culture on mental health and counselling.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the experience of First Nations people in relation to mental health and counselling, including the impact of intergenerational trauma, common mental health issues, and systemic disadvantages faced by this population.
Students will also learn about intersectionality and the social contexts of disability, neurodiversity, sexuality, and gender identity in relation to mental health and counselling, as well as the common issues faced by these populations.
