Content

Students will learn to apply advanced psychological knowledge of biopsychosocial models of health in the assessment and treatment of mental health comorbidities and psychological issues related to chronic, sub-acute and acute health conditions, including pain and cancer, and further their understanding of the role of health and medical illness in the aetiology, progress and recovery of mental health conditions. Students will also develop their knowledge of psychopharmacology and its role in the biopsychosocial treatment of common mental health disorders, whilst also critically examining the role of clinical psychology in medication adherence and other health behaviour change. A key aim of the unit is to build students’ competence in the application of clinical psychology within health and medical practice settings, including rehabilitation. This will include a focus on the professional identity of clinical psychologists working within multi-disciplinary medical teams and the development of competence in secondary consultation and other critical communication modes relevant to medical and other health settings. The unit will be the opportunity for students to learn and practice applications of CBT and ACT in the management of, and adjustment to, illness and injury.
